What We Name Fire

What we name fire
is chemistry:
a reaction releasing
energy latent
in dead, dry wood.
The flame reveals
what was present already.
If old logs contain
such hidden blazing light,
it is not hard to believe
God can reside
in the brown skin
of a Middle Eastern woodworker.
Not at all.
