"Among the Dead" [A Lament for El Paso]

In time, yes
death
came to this leaf,
but gently, almost kindly,
leaving its intricate frame intact,
no violence, no tearing.
Unfathomable is
the terrible ease
with which fragile life
can be cut short,
torn by hate and
fear and
bullets.
Jesus waits among the dead.
