"But Not the Thread"

It feels somehow backward
to see the spider
but not the web. Many times
I have spotted strands
woven
into a corner or a branch
without the weaver.
Tonight, seeing the artisan herself
but not the thread that holds her
reminds me: we are each held
by a strong unseen grip
even now.
