"Sent to Each Other"

The dog from the farm at the crossroads
came over and sat down with me
as I walked to the front of the church (again).
At moments like this I wonder
Who is welcoming whom?
Was I sent to scratch his ears,
or was he sent to rest on my knee?
Or perhaps
we are all sent to each other.
