"Augusts and Emperors"

Caesar Augustus thought
naming a month for himself
would make his legacy last forever.
But here it is, late summer
and the first orange leaf of fall
reminds me that
Augusts and emperors do not last,
and the only way to accept this world
is with its fragility.
