The dirt
on the prayer book cover
is earned
by kneeling
in the fresh dug earth,
lowering the ashes
of a dear saint
into the ground,
pronouncing the ancient words
"Dust to dust"
over her molecules,
and tracing the cross
in the handful of soil
you poured out.

Your sermon for sweet Betty was spot on yesterday Pastor. I've known Betty all of my life and you described her perfectly. She cared for me one summer while my mother was hospitalized. She always was a source of comfort. Thank you for such wonderful words.
